Hello my name is Brett Wilhelm. I am so excited to be the new Missouri DeafBlind Services program manager for Vancro. Just to tell you a little about myself, I have been DeafBlind all my life I have a condition called Norrie disease which causes both hearing and vision loss. I wore hearing aids for many years and now I have two Cochlear implants. My two primary communication methods are spoken English and Braille. I have served the Blind and DeafBlind Community for many years. From 2011 to 2013 I attended World Services for the Blind in Little Rock where I received my certification to teach assistive technology. From 2015 to 2016 I attended the Helen Keller Center in New York where I gained my first exposure to the diverse DeafBlind community. I learned to communicate with those who use spoken English and those who use ASL. I also interned an HKNC’s tech department. Following my return from HKNC, I returned home and launched my own assistive technology consulting business. I also began training people with the ICAN Connect programs in both Missouri and Iowa. During this time I also got my AA degree with a certificate in marketing from St. Charles Community College. In addition to my technology work with DeafBlind people, I also have made other contributions to the Missouri DeafBlind community. I served as Vice President and am now President of Sight and Sound Impaired of St Louis or SASI. SASI is a support group for DeafBlind people and their families. I also served on various committees that deal with deaf-blindness including Missouri School for the Blind’s advisory committee. The SSP program has given me the independence to take advantage of all of these opportunities. I am so excited to have the opportunity to work with all of you to continue to grow this amazing program. I look forward to having the pleasure of meeting all of you in the weeks and months to come.
