Continuing Education

Vancro offers workshops, trainings and mentorship opportunities for ASL interpreters, SSPs, the Deaf community and the professionals who work with them.

Vancro is now an approved RID CMP Sponsor

Hi there! My name is Page Kirby, I am the Program Manager for Community Engagement and I manage our continuing education program here at VIIS.

We have an exciting announcement to share with you! We were recently approved by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) as a Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) sponsor. As you may already know, as part of our commitment to uplifting the interpreting community and the communities that we serve, we offer free workshops with CEUs to the interpreters on our roster. CMP sponsorship means that we will be able to process CEUs for our workshops in house for a faster turnaround time and will allow us to offer CEUs for a wider variety of workshops and trainings.

As a CMP sponsor, we may also be able to provide CEUs for academic coursework and non-traditional activities. For more information on what types of activities may qualify for CEUs, you can reference RID’s website here. If you believe you have an activity that would qualify for CEUs and you would like to request processing or if you have any questions, please reach out to us at workshops@vancro.com.

We look forward to learning with you!

Lunch & Learn: Motivational Interviewing
January 22, 2025
Online via Zoom

Gray flyer with a photo of two women having a discussion in a professional setting

Vancro will be hosting a 45 minute Lunch & Learn session worth .75 CEUs on January 22.

The topic of this lunch & learn is “Motivational Interviewing: Recognizing Techniques in Interpreting Settings”. In this lunch & learn, interpreters can discover how motivational interviewing is used in settings like healthcare, counseling, and social services. Design specifically for interpreters, this session will provide an overview of MI’s key principles and techniques, explores relevance in the deaf community and highlights scenarios where interpreters are likely to encounter it. Motivational interviewing happens in more situations than you might think as an interpreter.

This Lunch & Learn is open exclusively to Vancro interpreters, staff and SSPs, so save some space on your calendar on January 22nd for this 45 minute lunch and learn session! We’d love to have you!

The Willow Tree Project:
Regional Signs Workshop Series Pt 1
January 25, 2025
Online via Zoom

Regional signs workshop series with a circular graphic of colorful handsColorful hand-drawn willow tree with green leaves.

Vancro is sponsoring CEUs for the first session of The Willow Tree Project’s new Regional Signs Workshop Series on January 25, 2025.

Join The Willow Tree Project in an exciting new workshop series, hosted completely in ASL. Each workshop will consist of 2-3 Deaf individuals from representing different states. Our goal is for participants to discover the beauty of ASL’s diversity across the U.S., learn signs they may encounter in VRS/VRI work or during testing, and focus on language. Be sure to check for future workshops, as this series is ongoing and aims to discuss all fifty states.
Format:
Presenters will tell us about who they are today and where they come from, including in which state they learned ASL. From there, presenters will provide a short list of words from four categories: legal, medical, general, and slang, shown on a PowerPoint. Participants can expect to see the similarities and differences between the ASL and English vocabulary from each presenter, plus any background knowledge the presenter may have on the origin of the sign. The workshop will provide ample time for Q & A, so bring questions. For example: you can ask how a sign you’ve seen might be interpreted into English, ask about city signs, or local colloquialisms.
This session of our series will include Ohio and Massachusetts.
Presenters: Jenny Hurst (she/her) and Rhys McGovern.
Presented in ASL only with no interpretation.
This workshop will NOT be recorded.
Fee for workshop: $25
(After you register, you will receive an email with payment information. If you do not receive that email within 24 hours, please contact us. Registration is not complete until payment is received.)
Refund policy: Workshop fee is non-refundable for any reason.
Transparency: Fee covers cost of presenters.
Location: Zoom (Zoom link will be sent 24-48 hours before the event.)
Audience: Recent sign language studies graduates, CODAs, working interpreters, members of the signing community.
Registration closes January 22nd, 2025.

HYBRID
AI, Interpreting and Language Access
CIT Pre Conference
November 13, 2024

Save the Date flyer for the CIT Pre Conference

Vancro is sponsoring RID CEUs for this workshop that provides context to the Guidance on AI and Interpreting Services for using automated interpreting by artificial intelligence (AIxAI). The Guidance prioritizes end users and public safety in four principles that, if followed, will (eventually) generate Safe, Accountable, Fair and Ethical (“SAFE”) interpreting by AI. One session in the workshop will review federal law on the use of artificial intelligence for interpreting. Another session will discuss the concept of positional misunderstanding, which are misunderstandings based on habits of how to perform structural roles associated with a job (Doerr, 2019). Finally, the Coalition for Sign Language Equity in Technology — formerly the Advisory Group on AI and Sign Language Interpreting — will reveal an exciting, brand new introductory level AIxAI curriculum to orient the profession to technological and social/interactional developments, including how to strengthen the value of human interpreters. The published Guidance and AIxAI curriculum are influenced and informed as a result of webinars and a symposium hosted by the Advisory Group on AI and Sign Language Interpreting in 2023-2024.
