Jane Hecker-Cain has been a sign language interpreter for 45 years. Jane’s Cousin Leo was deaf but didn’t sign. Jane remembers all the kids in her family taking turns sitting in front of Cousin Leo so she could read their lips. When Jane was in high school, her family was friends with neighbors who had 8 kids – 4 Deaf and 4 hearing. That friendship led Jane to first become a Teacher of the Deaf and then an Interpreter.
Jane’s credentials include RID Certifications: IC/TC, CSC, CI & CT, SC: L and NIC-Advanced.
Jane holds a B.S in Deaf Education from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois) and, at age 50, earned a master’s in educational leadership from the University of Southern Maine.
Besides teaching and interpreting, Jane has been New Jersey’s Librarian for the Deaf, New Jersey’s Full-Time Legal Interpreter, an administrator at Maine’s Governor Baxter School for the Deaf, and a teacher at the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youth and Adults on Long Island, New York. Finally, Jane trained future interpreters for 10 years at Suffolk County Community College also on Long Island.
Jane lives in Kennebunk, Maine and works throughout New England either in person or remote. She and her husband, Kevin, raised 3 daughters and have 4 grandchildren.
